Aina on the 91st Academy Awards Red Carpet
25th February 2019 - Aina Matamoros
Last night was the most glamorous night of the year, not only in Hollywood but also in the whole world. Or, at least, it used to be.
Last night was the 91st Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars, and the top actors, actresses, and celebrities, in general, walked the top red carpet with their “best” gowns. And I say “best” in quotation marks because, lately, the highest-paid and most beautiful because of that people in the world are taking it too simple, discreet and low key, in my opinion. If I had the chance to attend this gala and put on a designer dress with jewelry worth my whole life OMG you know I would be as extra as I could be, always with class, style, and elegance, of course.
I will only talk about my favorite looks. I do not like to criticize someone for wearing something I personally do not like; everybody (and stylist) can have bad days (although we should all agree that there are some looks that have no clue, like: how come did you dare to get out of your house with that?).
Let’s start with the star of the night, and of every award gala this year so far: LADY GAGA. There was a lot of expectation about what she was going to wear. Having way passed her I put on everything I can phase, some people were still expecting to see her wearing an extravagant touch to her look (like the slightly blue hair in the Golden Globes). But she did not make them happy. She chose not one but two all-black sober dresses that make a statement: I, Lady Gaga, am a real actress and artist and I take this very seriously. She walked the red carpet with an Alexander McQueen dress that had this wide hips silhouette structured, paired with long leather gloves (unnecessary for me). She changed her dress when she sang Shallow with Bradley (shout out to the fact that we will never get over this surreal romantic moment – best of the night) and went up to stage to receive the award for best original song for Shallow again. Lady Gaga chose a Brandon Maxwell all-black princess gown that was even more beautiful than the first. She looked like the powerful badass queen she is while also looking sweet, delicate and gorgeous. So two very similar (personally I would have chosen something more different) but right choices, although a little too simple and plain.
However, let’s not forget that, actually, Lady Gaga did wear something quite extra in her outfit: a 128-carat yellow Tiffany Diamond on her neck that completed the look. It was extra, not only for its surreal value, but also because had only been worn by two other women in its 142 years of history: first by Sheldon Whitehouse, at the 1957 Tiffany Ball, and then by the great Audrey Hepburn, for promotional photographs for Breakfast at Tiffany’s in 1961.

I will share below my favorite looks but I want to highlight my number one favorite of the night: Gemma Chan in Valentino spring 2019 Haute Couture. The Crazy Rich Asians actress, a new face to red carpets this year that has earned a spot amongst the best-dressed actresses in all of them, wore a spectacular big bright pink dress designed by Pierpaolo Piccioli that seemed to be made just for her. T was a capacious pleated design that felt like a new way to wear a ball gown - and it had pockets! Yes, it was a bit of a risk, but she carried it off with such modernity and ease of form… It is a: YAAAS GIRL YOU SLAY! Thank you, Gemma, for doing it.

Finally, I want to talk about the Vanity Fair after-party. The A-league of Hollywood celebrities are mixed with models, singers, young talents, athletes… and it has become the place to be daring and risky with your look, especially when it comes to the models and youngest stars. So I say BRAVO!
They say some designs are so extra that sometimes they are kind of tacky, but I think it should be this way. Many people said Kendall’s dress was way too explicit but hey, she was wearing a beautiful Rami Kadi Haute Couture dress and she has a spectacular body that allows her to wear it, so be it. We are living in a time that women are strongly and, most of the time, unfairly judge by what they wear. I think that is really unbelievable. Everyone, girls, let’s wear whatever we feel like wearing, whatever makes us feel confident, beautiful, sexy, powerful and, above it all, proud of our bodies and what we are.
That does not mean that you can be daring and spectacular with no need to show your “everything” off. Look at Lupita Nyong’o, for example, she is the personification of elegance in this feathered white dress by Oscar de la Renta. She looks amazing and she did take a risk we all are thankful for.
