Love Poems at Valentino FW 19/20
5th March 2019 - Aina Matamoros

“The people you love become ghosts inside of you and like this you keep them alive.” - Robert Montgomery.
It was Sunday afternoon. I was chilling at home, waiting for it to be 5 pm and watch the Valentino show on streaming. I wanted to watch it especially because of the quote mentioned at the beginning of this entry. I saw it on Valentino’s Instagram stories, alongside other love quotes under the hashtag #ValentinoOnLove, which I guessed it was the theme of the upcoming fashion show. And, surprise, it was.
I always love what Pierpaolo Piccioli does at Valentino; the dresses are a fantasy. I normally do not like the typical inspirational quotes but these ones were different, they were love quotes but not romantic cheesy love quotes (which I hate), but quotes about love for life, love for people, love for yourself. The initial quote got my attention and really hit me because I found it so beautiful and true.
The show started. I watched. And I did not really see any more poetry or love quotes apart from the first one, which was written in a huge illuminated billboard at the back of the runway. I liked the show and the designs but I did not love these last ones. Valentino Couture is always amazing but ready-to-wear felt a little plain. I loved the statement short coats the most. I think they were different from what Piccioli usually does, and they looked fresh and very good on the models. I was not really into the handmaid’s tale inspired hats, but they gave a singular touch to the looks.
After the show, I wanted to discover where were the hidden poetry and love quotes. So I started investigating and finally found out that they were printed or embroidered inside coats, bags, boots or on mid-layers of tulle dresses. That way, the person wearing the clothes would be the only one to know they are there.
I found it perfect: these quotes are preciously personal and everyone can give them a different meaning and dedicate them to a unique person in their lives. They are very intimate, a secret that you keep inside your clothes touching your skin, touching your soul.
Once again: Bravo, Pierpaolo.
