Back to basics at Céline FW 19/20

3rd March 2019 - Aina Matamoros

WOW is that really Céline by Hedi Slimane? Is this happening? That was the first thing that came to my head when I saw the first look at the latest Céline show. The new collection for Fall Winter 2019/2020 was not what anyone expected. It was not what Hedi usually does and not what he did in his two previous collections for the French brand. It was not Hedi anymore; it was (finally) CELINE. And we are all very happy about it.

The designer was harshly criticized on his first collection for Céline because it was like everything he had done before at Saint Laurent: very short sparkling party dresses, leather jackets, high heels, and military boots. It was good, but it was not new and not Céline.

However, it looks like he is now starting to get the values and style of the French brand and putting them on the runway.

The looks were inspired in Céline designs from the 70’s. Models wore outfits with skinny jeans, big masculine coats (and capes), over-the-knee boots, silk lady-like dresses and culottes in very basic colors: black, white, brown (dark and camel) and navy. On accessorizes, most of the models wore silk scarfs, bags with renewed designs and aviator sunglasses on.

But, where’s the gold? Where’s the sparkle? Wait for it: in the final looks. Did you really think Hedi was going to let it go? No way. He had to add his signature “move” to the brand and his designs. So the final looks included a sequin blouse, a golden sparkle jacket & culottes matching set, a silk black and shiny golden thread dress and, the last look was a sleek black suit with a black sequin shirt underneath – the perfect combination.

Hedi Slimane presented a strong, determined and very stylish woman: the Céline woman
