Savage x Fenty show: Rihanna creates a masterpiece of dancing and fashion
23rd September 2019 - Aina Matamoros
When Rihanna announced that she would be doing a televised show to present her new Savage x Fenty collection, everyone went crazy, because we all know it would be one of the most amazing shows never done before. And, luckily, it was.
The show took place during NYFW at Barclay’s Center. Every guest had to leave their phone locked because it was not allowed to share anything about it until its airing date: September 20th on Amazon Prime Video. Few images came out and they confirmed once again that we were about to see something epic, unique and wonderful. And, luckily, it was more than that. I do not think I will be over it ever, or well, until her next show.
The show documentary starts with the previous planning of the whole performance. You can see Rihanna taking part in every part of the show, from the collection design, of course, to the choreography, the music, the cast, the guests, the musical guests, the stage… everything. And, to my surprise, dancing and the choreography were the center of it all. We already knew it was going to be more than just a fashion show, because musical performances by A-list artists were confirmed, but I did not expect that there would be dancing performances. The entire show is a whole dancing performance created by the one and only Parris Goebel. I have been a dancer since I was 3 years old and I always feel that it is a much-forgotten part of the whole show idea, and to be able to see that Rihanna put it as the center of it all just made me so happy. Now everyone can appreciate how amazing dancers are and how important it is to have a killer choreography to lead a show.
Rihanna opened the show herself, dancing in a pillar, surrounded by Parris Goebel and her dancers, and wearing the first Savage x Fenty look of the night. The rest of the dancers were also wearing looks from the collection and they looked awesome. They were the ones that did more outfit changes than anyone else (and I assume they had to do it like in no time so another proof that dancers are superheroes).
The show was divided into different segments, each one opened by one of the famous models walking the show: Gigi Hadid for the first one and Bella Hadid for the last one, and also Joan Smalls, Cara Delavigne or Laverne Cox. The models did not just walk, but they put a little drama into her appearances, looking sexier than ever. But they were not the only ones looking that sexy and hot: all the cast that took part in the show looked spectacular. A cast that was the most diverse ever seen in a fashion show: all sizes, all genders, all races, all sexualities, even some models with artificial legs.
Apart from all the performances and elements of the show, we have to talk about the main reason all of this is done: the Savage x Fenty collection. The lingerie pieces were comfortable and hot, sexy and daring at the same time and, most importantly, they make everyone feel that way. Lace and transparencies were present in every look and pieces included bras, panties, and bodysuits that were presented with matching gloves, tights and pieces covering the models’ heads. The first looks were total black outfits and then they evolved to brighter colors such as pastel green, red, purple, blue and yellow.
Rihanna created an empowering show not only for women but for everyone to be able to feel comfortable, sexy, hot and able to do anything with their bodies. It was a SAVAGE celebration of the human’s sexuality and the power of confidence in oneself.
