Cannes 2019 - Red Carpet
27th May 2019 - Aina Matamoros
Sun and warm weather are coming up and that means Cannes is here. The 72nd Festival de Cannes just took place this last week and, as usual, the A-list celebrities all gathered up in this enchanting French Riviera city to attend the screenings of the new movies. Actually, let’s be honest, actors, actresses and models (especially) only go to Cannes to dress up in the most amazing and spectacular dresses and show off their looks and legs on the red carpet.
Also, there is this other “side event” called the Amfar Gala, just another small celebrity gathering and fashion show.
Let’s face it: sadly, so little people care about films and cinema. Cannes is all about the dresses, the parties, the yachts, the champagne, the sun, the showing off lifestyle, the glamour and about living the best life.
To start my red carpet analysis, I would like to talk about the highlight of this year’s looks: voluminous and sparkling dresses ruled the premieres and galas. The Cannes red carpet is one of the most glamorous and daring of the year, so it is always a little EXTRA. I would say, especially because of the weather, the relaxed environment and the long list of models that walk on it. Models like to show off their bodies (which is normal and very understandable since the OMG bodies they got – because it’s their job to have them, basically). Also, we can see some non-usual designers on the carpet, and that makes it richer and more original, in a pure fashion point of view. And because of that, I think the Cannes red carpet is one of the bests of the year.
Feathers were also very present: from gowns with only feathers on the bottom, others with a feathered skirt but plain corset skirt, to all feathered dresses, both long and short, using different kinds of feathers (big feathers, thin feathers…) and colors. Here are some of my favorites.

Dua Lipa in Valentino

Ana Beatriz Barros in Georges Hobeika
Maya Henry in Ralph & Russo
One of the models listed above, Elsa Hosk, was one of the best dressed for me. She also was one of my favorites from last year, so I could say she is my Cannes goddess. See the three looks she wore this year: all of them are amazing in its way. The Alberta Ferretti all feathered purple dress is just perfection and so glamorous; the rainbow Etro dress looks so magic and pure on her that just makes her look like the personification of fantasy (it is actually a tribute to the dress worn by Lauren Hutton at the 1975 Oscar Ceremony, and it is considered one of the most beautiful dresses in the red carpets’ history); and, for the Amfar Gala, Elsa wore a short white dress from Redemption, with matching long white gloves that were finished with puffed sleeves at the edge.

Other dresses I would like to highlight are Kendall Jenner’s pink tulle gown from the new collaboration between designer Giambattista Valli and brand H&M (it is this year’s H&M special collection and they used the AMfar Gala to present the first designs worn by celebrities such as Kendall and Chiara Ferragni). Elle Fanning, who was part of the Festival’s jury becoming the youngest person in history to be part of it) was also one of the best dressed. For me, her best look was the one inspired by Dior’s New Look, she looked so delicate and stylish. I also think it's worth mentioning the ageless Helen Mirren in this shiny Elie Saab and debuting a new hairstyle: PINK! Flawless Margot Robbie wore a pants and shirt matching set from Chanel, which was the perfect fit to present her new movie. Anja Rubik brought the rock and daring style to the carpet wearing a Saint Laurent black suit with no shirt under the blazer. And another of my personal favorites, Julianne Moore, who wore a silver paillette Givenchy dress covered by a pink cape on her shoulders. Toni Garrn's Ulyana Sergeenko Couture dress and Neelam Gill's Nicole + Felicia Couture dress were two looks I would totally wear (and yes, I would look amazing on them)

Last but not least, I would like to talk about the Once upon a time in Hollywood Premiere. For those who do not know, this is the latest movie by director Quentin Tarantino starring two of the most amazing actors of ours times: Leonardo Di Caprio and Brad Pitt. Yes, ladies, you read well: these two MEN are acting in the same movie and it hits the theaters in July so we all know what to do that day and we still have a little more than a month to prepare for it. It is going to be a HUGE feminine hormones explosion. Quentin, I do not know if you just did us a favor or a death sentence. Jokes aside, they are also very talented actors and the movie is said to be very very good. But just look at them at the Cannes red carpet: I do not even know which word to use, so imagine a whole movie; I will be speechless for a week.
